The world of cargo theft is big business. To be specific, in 2011 cargo theft was a $35 billion business. Of the reported thefts the most common states were California, Texas, New Jersey, Illinois, and Georgia.
The most common targets of thieves were food and drink products, base metals, electronics, apparel, and building materials. Most thefts occurred on Friday with the weekend a close second. Truck stops and unsecured parking lots were where most thefts happened.
