Winter weather creates the perfect conditions for slips and falls.
In the trucking industry, winter ice and snow slip and fall injuries account for 1/3 of all workers' comp claims.
So, to help avoid injury when walking on ice and snow, here are some simple tips:
- Take the safest route to your destination, and take your time.
- Don’t use your smartphone while walking—it’s distracting.
- Walk deliberately. Bend your knees a little and take slow, short steps. Doing so increases traction and lowers the odds of falling.
- Wear boots or other slip-resistant footwear.
- Wear traction aids when conditions warrant their use.
- Watch for "black ice” or hard packed snow which can be just as slippery.
- Use caution when getting in and out of vehicles, and use the vehicle for support.
- Please use “Three Points of Contact” at all times!
- When walking on steps or ramps, always use the hand railings and plant your feet firmly on each step.
- When entering a building, remove as much snow from your boots as you can, and watch for wet and slippery floors.
