CVSA's Operation Safe Driver Week coming up Oct. 16-22

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s Operation Safe Driver Week will begin this Sunday on Oct. 16 and run through Saturday, Oct. 22.

The program is designed to combat unsafe driving behaviors by both commercial motor vehicle and passenger vehicle drivers.

Law enforcement will amplify traffic safety enforcement and education during Safe Driver Week.

Throughout North America, law enforcement will be on the lookout for speeding, failure to use a seat belt while operating a commercial vehicle or passenger vehicle, distracted driving, failure to obey traffic control devices, traveling too closely, improper lane change, and other unsafe driving conduct.

Last year, more than 21,000 commercial and passenger vehicle drivers were pulled over during Operation Safe Driver Week. More than 19,000 roadside inspections were conducted on commercial drivers and vehicles. Passenger vehicle drivers were found to speed significantly more than commercial drivers.

The top five warnings and citations issued to commercial drivers in 2015 were:

  • Size and weight
  • Speeding
  • Failure to use a seat belt while operating vehicle
  • Failure to obey traffic control device
  • Using a hand-held phone

For more information about Operation Safe Driver Week, CVSA encourages drivers to reach out to the agency or department responsible for commercial motor vehicle safety within their jurisdiction.
