The world of cargo theft is big business. To be specific, in 2011 cargo theft was a $35 billion business. Of the reported thefts the most common states were California, Texas, New Jersey, Illinois, and Georgia.

The most common targets of thieves were food and drink products, base metals, electronics, apparel, and building materials. Most thefts occurred on Friday with the weekend a close second. Truck stops and unsecured parking lots were where most thefts happened.

As a carrier we are not immune to this reality. To stay in front of this costly and potentially dangerous situation consider the following tips.

• Shut your truck off and lock all the doors when you are not in the vehicle.
• When possible, don't stop for at least two hours after picking up a load
• Stay out of poorly lit and out of the way truck stops.
• Understand the products we haul are high on the list of desired freight for thieves.
